Sam A. Kiger, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE
At the University of Missouri-Columbia, Dr. Kiger is La Pierre Distinguished Professor of Engineering, Associate Dean of Engineering, and Director of the Center for Explosion Resistant Design. He earned his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at the University of Illinois-Urbana.
Prior to moving to the University of Missouri in 1996, Dr. Kiger was Chairman and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at West Virginia University, 1989-1996, and he was a Research Engineer at the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center between 1973 and 1989.
Dr. Kiger is an internationally recognized expert in explosion effects and blast resistant structural design. On Oct 28, 2008 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in Shock and Vibration “for outstanding contributions and leadership in the community and for profound contributions in blast resistant design”. In 1985 Kiger was recognized as the US Army Corps of Engineers Researcher of the Year for his work in explosion resistant structural analysis and design. He has authored or co-authored over 100 technical papers and reports and he is the principal author of the Army Technical Manual “Fundamentals of Protective Construction”, TM5-855. Kiger is a Fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE); previous chairman of the ASCE Technical Committee on Shock and Vibratory Effects; Past President of the WV Section of ASCE; and a member of the National Research Council’s Committee for Oversight and Assessment of Blast Effects and Related Research. Kiger is a licensed Professional Engineer.
